Unfortunately for BI administrators, installing and configuring BusinessObjects 4.0 is a bit more involved than it was in past releases. This is all due to one of the core services known as the Adaptive Processing Server (or APS). Out of the box in 4.0, the APS is configured to handle 23 different “common services”, including things such as Auditing, Monitoring, Data Federation, and Lifecycle Management. While this technically does work, by default all of these services have just 1 GB of memory to share between them. This can be a big problem — even causing the APS to crash randomly. This is especially true if you have the Full Content indexing enabled for Platform Search (it is enabled by default).
