Business Objects Enterprise 6 Migration, Architecture and Tuning for a Regional Utility Company

The Client

A Regional Utility Company

For more than 180 years, the client has been meeting the energy needs of more than one million business and residential electric customers and more than 600,000 gas customers in an economically diverse, 2,300-square-mile area.

The Challenge

The client had a demonstrated business need for increased performance in their near real-time reporting environment, as well as increased accessibility through WebIntelligence to internal and external Clients. The initial goal was to install and configure these servers with Business Objects Enterprise 6, while migrating the current BusinessObjects 5x release to that platform.

In addition, the new e6 Repository would become the Master Corporate repository for the company, combining multiple document and universe domains. Integral to this solution was the BI architecture and its ability to scale as necessary to integrate new servers into the clusters with added Fault Tolerance, Load Balancing and Fail Over capabilities.

The Solution

The client was provided with detailed architectures to meet their needs, leveraging the core implementation and incorporating new and legacy servers to achieve these goals.

Altek Solutions successfully configured the new servers with Business Objects Enterprise 6 with a primary and secondary cluster, troubleshot various issues (one which involved BO Technical Support logging a bug), tuned new servers for optimal performance, migrated the entire Business Objects 5.x environment to 6.1a, and successfully configured BCA and Auditor.

Altek Solutions also provided scripts for load testing of BCA and provided traceability matrices for tuning and system stress testing of BusinessObjects (in conjunction with Auditor), Windows Server and the Oracle 9 repository Database.
